Hello there OTO, I’ve mentioned a few times already that we’d be talking a bit about health and well-being this year, and this is one of those blog posts. The best part, well actually there’s lots of best parts, is that I’m bringing it local to make your lives easier and the other best part is that you will feel so good by consuming this superfood that you will thank me (btw, this is not a infomercial but that totally just sounded like the start of one!). We’re talking about Fermented foods here and I’m not kidding when I say the only local place to get fresh fermented foods is right here at the Orange Home Grown Farmers & Artisans Market. And the lady of the hour is Chef Chele A. Eades, creator of Wildly Fermented, and passionate maker and consumer of fermented foods herself. Me, myself and I are only just beginning to learn about fermented foods and what they can do for your health, but believe me when I say that they’ve been around forever, and in about every culture. My point is, if you’re sitting there going ‘what the heck are fermented foods?’ let me reassure you, you are not alone.
Now, I could get in to the nitty gritty of what fermented foods do and how they work in your system (actually I couldn’t, not really anyway), but I’m going to give you the summarized version that I myself understand. You know how after you eat, you feel bloated or you have gas or just terrible indigestion sometimes? Well, eating a little bit of fermented foods with dinner can drastically help those problems. You see, the fermented foods will boost the good bacteria in your belly, and that’s the stuff that breaks down the food you eat. So at the end of the day, your gut will thank you! I know there’s so much more to it, but I want you to go and hear it from Chef Chele at the Market. However, I will give you just a few extra bullet points here on the many bonuses of eating fermented:
- You will have more energy
- All-natural detoxification will occur
- Your immune system will get a boost (we all need this, it’s crazy flu season right now!)
- Your digestion will improve, and you will be so happy
- You will be in a better mood
- Your muscles will be more flexible
- You will experience mental clarity
All of this is possible by adding fermented foods to your daily menu. You foodies will know what I’m talking about, or at least you may be hearing some rumblings out there about fermented foods as they swing up on the trending scale. But, for anyone who struggles with their digestion (LIKE ME!!) you will want to investigate this and feel better in 2015.
What you need to know about Chef Chele is that she is passionate about food, and grew up eating foods for health, and learning from her grandmother how food heals and keeps us thriving. She can teach you a lot just by stopping by her booth and saying hello. She also has a variety of different products from a series of fermented foods, like her first RyKrout, to a delicious raw dip called Zuch (it only lasts 2 days in our house, then it’s gone!), to broth (used for drinking not cooking with) and juice, and even a delicious chocolate mousse concoction that is rich and delicious. Last week, I bought fermented garlic from her, wowzers, pop one of those and bazinga! I know a lot of people who would enjoy this experience, including myself, just sayin’…it’s good for you too for all the aforementioned reasons.
This Saturday (Jan. 24th), she’ll be making a presentation at 10:15 at the Farmer’s Market on Entree Salads, it’s worth a stop by as she will be passing along some very valuable education on food, then you can stop by her booth and pick up some goodies to try out for the week.
