When my friends ask me to explain the enticing mystery of avocado toast to them, I usually say, “Well imagine chips and guacamole. Now replace the crispy tortilla chip with toasted bread. More carbs? Nothing could be better!” This past week, I set out on a mission to find the best avocado toast in Old Towne, and now I have the ultimate avocado toast guide for you. These are listed in no particular order, but do contain my genuine thoughts on the toast.
- Provisions Market has an avocado toast so dressed up, you would hardly recognize it. On top of sourdough bread, lays a thick layer of mashed avocado, espelette & shallot, watermelon radish, fried capers, and Jacobsen salt. It looks overwhelming at first, but the flavors work so perfectly together, you’ll be craving another piece instantly. It is served on a wooden board, which perfectly fits the aesthetic of the restaurant. This toast comes in at $9.
2. The Aussie Bean has an avocado toast, as well. I was not even aware that they had an Avo Toast on the menu until a friend suggested it to me. At the bottom of the coffee and cold brew-filled menu, there are some hidden snacks. This toast is very simple, however, it might have been my favorite. The toast is a bit thicker than the toast at Provisions, and has a small layer of Vegemite on top… very Aussie. For those of you who do not know, Vegemite is an Australian spread made from brewer’s yeast extract and added spices. It acts as a salty base in which the avocado mash sits upon… a very delicious combination. This toast comes out at $7.
3. Watson’s Soda Fountain and Cafe has an avocado toast under the “Breakfast Chefialties” section of their menu. This avocado mash is served on a thick piece of wheat bread, with an olive oil drizzle and cracked black pepper on top. This order comes with two slices of bread and fresh fruit on the side, a pleasant surprise! This toast comes out to $9.
4. And lastly, a personal creation. It is not stated directly on the menu. However, with my love of avocado toast, I was able to find the affordable “college student-priced” version of an avocado toast at Starbucks. Ask for a toasted multigrain bagel and grab one of the small packages of avocado spread from the refrigerated items section. Spread the avocado on your freshly toasted bagel, and you are good to go! It makes a perfect bite if you are on the go or in need of a cheap, tasty snack. This avocado bagel comes out to $3.
