You may have noticed that there’s a lot of moving around going on lately in Old Towne Orange. Especially on that little strip of Chapman just west of the Plaza. I think it all started when Vintiques moved down the road next to Ruby’s. That created a chain reaction…Joyride Vintage moved a few storefronts over, then Circle City Barbers moved from around the corner into Joyride’s old spot to face Chapman, and finally MMD Antiques moved in and now everybody’s open for business and ready to go! But this story’s about Matt and Lisa De Vaul, proud owners of the newest shop in Old Towne, MMD Antiques.
They had planned on opening up shop this Friday to kick off the Labor Day weekend, but lucky for us, they were ready early! I stopped in last week to get the scoop and here’s what I learned. MMD stands for Matthew McRae De Vaul, and Matt is the creative genius behind all that’s offered in the store. They specialize in industrial decor, upcycled and recycled items like work benches. He finds these great pieces and then fixes them up so they look fabulous in your home or office, and by ‘fabulous’ I mean perfectly and beautifully antiqued. Matt had been selling in several Old Towne Orange shops on consignment, but the timing was right for him to open his own place and everything fell into place.
The De Vaul’s have a great story that I have to share with you too because it ties them right here to Old Towne Orange. Matt met his wife Lisa right here in Old Towne working at the Wells Fargo Starbucks. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the new Starbucks on Chapman and Tustin right (I can walk to that one from my office and I love it!!)? Well, Lisa opened up that location and was the force behind making the unique concept a reality. The pair were engaged on a bench in Plaza Park, the center of our Old Towne universe and were married at the Chapman Chapel. They now have 2 adorable daughters, that I got to meet just the other day, who both attend St. John’s (also Matt’s alma mater). Anyway, the point here is that they LOVE OTO and I hope you all have a chance to stop by and love them back!
One thing you can’t miss is the big pink cow gracing their store. Of course, there’s a story behind that cow that you locals should ask about, as he may look familiar to you…well, other than his pinkness.
They are located at 131 W. Chapman Avenue. Like them on Facebook and Instagram! Like me on Instagram too!!
