3 Simple Tips on Flowers for Mom

In Lifestyle, Old Towne Orange, Top Posts

It’s National Small Business week starting May 5, so we’re getting a jump start by featuring some amazing shops in town! We actually started last week when we featured spring planting tips with Jack at The Potting Shed, but Mother’s Day is now on the horizon and flowers are a HUGE part of celebrating mom. To help us channel our inner arranger, we turned to the experts at The Dizzy Daisy for inspiration.

Dana, our favorite flower lady and business owner of The Dizzy Daisy, just loves our community and was ready and willing to get us in the Mother’s Day spirit. A stop at her shop will definitely get you in the mood with small gifts, cards, plants, and flowers galore! One-of-a-kind succulent arrangements greet you at the door (created by a local company, Garden Hobo) and your exploration will take you on to discover a variety of flowers and arrangements.

Tip #1 – Bring the Kids Along

Dana says the best part of Mother’s Day flowers is when kids come in with dads to pick out something special for mom. They pick a few stems, put them together, and feel oh-so-proud of themselves. Imaginations kick in and you just know that magical moments are in the making. Of course, Dana and her staff are there for support when needed (even if that means making the full arrangement for you). So whether you go big beautiful bouquet or sweet and hand-crafted by the kids, everybody wins come Mother’s Day!

Tip #2 – No Pennies in the Water

If you get your flowers from a flower shop make sure that you don’t add anything to the water. Your florist has already made sure your flowers are ready for enjoyment. Dana points out that you shouldn’t add pennies or bleach to your water, you’ll only create more bacteria which can hurt the flowers. However, if you cut the stems every few days and make sure your flowers have enough water they will stay beautifully in your vase for up to 2 weeks.

Tip #3 – Clean Home Grown Flowers

Many times our own gardens can be a great inspiration for beautiful flower arrangements. If you plan to gift flowers from your garden make sure that you clean them really well. This includes leaves and thorns. Dana notes that garden flowers won’t last as long as the ones in the shop but they are just as beautiful. Right now roses are in full bloom so have fun mixing and matching the beautiful roses with the foliage from your garden and you just might have a beautiful arrangement.

Life gets busy and sometimes there’s not enough time in the day to think of everything. If you find yourself waking up Sunday realizing its Mother’s day and you need a gift for that special woman in your life, don’t worry baby, because The Dizzy Daisy will be open on Mother’s Day weekend, just for you!
