Chapman University Goes Smoke-Free!

We received the great news that Chapman University will be going smoke-free on Monday, February 1, 2016. Finally!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Smoking cigarettes kills more than 480,000 Americans each year, and more than 41,000 of these deaths are from exposure to secondhand smoke (CDC, 2015). We want to thank Chapman for creating a smoke-free, healthy environment for our community.

Chapman’s Student Government Association (SGA) President and Senator led the movement for Chapman’s Orange campus to go completely smoke-free. There has been a widespread growth of smoke-free campuses, including many other universities in California. In Chapman’s press release, they explained that since 2010, smoke-free campuses have grown by 47%. We think this is a great move toward healthier lifestyles of Chapman students as well as community members.

Tobacco-free signThis was not a rash decision on Chapman’s part. According to Chapman University’s press release, the SGA surveyed Chapman’s student body to discover whether there was an initial problem at hand. From the survey, they found that 86% of those answering the survey said they were in favor of a completely smoke-free campus. Along with that, the Faculty Senate, staff advisory organization and Senior Staff approved of the movement.

Chapman wanted to make a commitment to promoting good health, protecting their students and community members from receiving second hand smoke. Starting February 1st, at the beginning of Spring Semester, Chapman’s campus will be smoke-free. Now, we can enjoy a leisurely walk or jog through the Chapman campus without worrying about inhaling bad fumes.

From iHOTO, we want to congratulate Chapman University for initiating a smoke-free campus. We are proud to have these students as a part of our community.
