Reception for The Typewriter: A Love Story. On display at the 1888 Center from September 28 through November 29, 2017.

The Typewriter: A Love Story features a richly illustrated collection of typewriter advertisements from the 1950s. This vibrant anthology of historic typewriter memorabilia originates from designer Janine Vangool’s publication The Typewriter: a Graphic History of the Beloved Machine.

From the industrial revolution to women entering the workforce, from one World War to another, from the home to the office, from collegiate life to Hollywood and pop culture… The Typewriter has an entertaining and significant story. These vintage ads and typewriter memorabilia have been lovingly collected by publisher, editor, and designer Janine Vangool. Vangool’s passion for typewriter ephemera has culminated in the robust publication The Typewriter: a Graphic History of the Beloved Machine.

The history of the typewriter reflects the ever changing progression of society. The Typewriter: A Love Story focuses on the richly illustrated advertisements of the 1950s. From elegant secretaries to dedicated students, the pages illuminate the many facets of a bygone machine.
