“Chapman University is pleased to offer Orange Home Grown the space to hold its weekly farmers market, and we have been happy to see this event’s growth and remarkable popularity,” said Chapman University’s Vice President of Campus Planning & Operations, Kris Olsen. “The University is proud to be a neighbor and a historic part of the Old Towne Orange community, and many of our students, faculty and staff are loyal customers of the market. We look forward to continuing as a committed supporter and partner of Orange Home Grown.”
“The Farmers Market is a well-loved event in the City of Orange. It’s great to see the community and friends come together to support local farmers and food artisans,” said City of Orange Mayor pro tem Mark A. Murphy. “It was very important to the City of Orange to work with Orange Home Grown to find a new home. Orange has a long history of agriculture production, and the farmers market helps to celebrate this part of our past while providing a great service to the community,” said Murphy.
Executive Chef Greg Daniels, owner of Haven Gastropub and Provisions Market, both located in the City of Orange said, “As a local chef and business owner, I’ve been selfishly involved with Orange Home Grown since the beginning, and now source over half our produce from there. While I loved the previous location, my hope is this new location will provide the community with a more open market feel, and give the farmers and vendors better exposure. See you there!”
On an ongoing basis, the community-focused Orange Home Grown Farmers and Artisans Market will be held every Saturday year-round from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 303 W. Palm Avenue. There are approximately 45 booths, with a wide array of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, specialty food items such as California olive oils, oysters, organic cheeses, artisan breads, sheep milk yogurts, cold-pressed juice, vegan offerings, fermented foods, pasture raised grass-fed meats, locally grown fruits and vegetables, eggs from pasture raised chickens, and more. Food sampling, children’s activities, cooking demonstrations, market dietitian, yoga classes and market tours are offered regularly by Orange Home Grown. The Orange Home Grown Farmers and Artisans Market is truly becoming a Saturday morning ritual for many local residents. The farmers market was recently named “Best Farmer’s Market in 2017” by the Orange County Register, and Orange Home Grown was awarded the “Grassroots Initiative” award by the American Planning Association at the state level this past October.
“I’m especially proud that the Orange Home Grown Farmers and Artisans Market accepts EBT/SNAP, but now we also offer Market Match”, stated Orange Home Grown Market Manager Lisa David. “Low-income folks can get an extra $10 per week to buy nutritious fresh fruits & veggies, and they also help support local farmers and Orange Home Grown’s community programs such as the OHG Education Farm, Orange Seed Lending Library, OHG Scholarship Program, and the new OHG Youth Food Literacy
Program sponsored by the Picerne Family Foundation. Now that’s empowering,” said David.
“I am extremely pleased that the strong partnership between Orange Home Grown, the City of Orange and Chapman University resulted in the ability of the Orange Home Grown Farmers & Artisans Market to continue serving the residents of Orange with the best and most innovative farmers market in Southern California”, said City of Orange City Manager Rick Otto.
