Hello everyone and welcome back to I Heart Old Towne Orange! Thank you for reading all summer, leaving us comments, and loving #OTO with us every day. If you have not caught up on all of our summer adventures, click here to visit the blog feed and read all about them.
Last week, I announced that our next series of blogs will be all about the Orange International Street Fair (OISF) - this year celebrating 46 years. However, this Old Towne Orange Labor Day tradition could not be possible without the amazing merchants, restaurants, and companies that host booths at the fair, share their culture, and educate the community. OISF is an event where friends and families can come together, make memories, eat great food, explore other cultures, and support local non-profits and businesses. What's not to love?
Last week, I blogged all about Assistance League of Orange at OISF. If you don't know ALO, you probably just don't know you know. ALO is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing humanitarian services to those in need within the community of Orange, including Operation School Bell, dental health, clothing, scholarship opportunities, and more. You might recognize their thrift shop on the southeast corner of the plaza that's always so wonderfully decorated. See?
This week, we are highlighting Elks Lodge Orange. Now you might ask: What is the Elks Lodge and who are the Elks? Well, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America is one of the oldest and largest fraternal organizations in the country. The Elks, as they are known, are committed to supporting their community with acts of community service, volunteering with schools, fire departments, and police departments, and assisting the needy youth of the nation.
They do so by donating and volunteering with the Southwest Spinal Cord injury fund, McPherson Magnet School, HomeAid, Mary's Kitchen and Mary's Purse, Threads of Love, the Ronald McDonald House, and more! The Elks are doing so much for our community - and we can't thank them enough! With over 1,900 lodges across the country, we are so happy to have one right here in Old Towne Orange.
And we're lucky because this Labor Day, The Elks are hosting a booth at OISF, as they have been for over 20 years. They believe in giving back to the community on that day by raising money for their charities. You'll be able to find them on English St. selling fish & chips and beer!
For the next two weeks, I will be highlighting two more organizations that contribute to the success and growth of - not only the OISF - but Old Towne Orange as well. That way, when you visit the OISF on Labor Day Weekend, you can stop by their booths and stores for yourself! Make sure to keep up with the blog and we will see you at OISF.
Elks care, and Elks Share!
