What’s New in Old Towne Orange – September 2019

With every blink of an eye, I feel like there is some new shop or eatery popping up in Old Towne Orange. We’re absolutely buzzing with excitement to try all the new things coming! But with all these new places opening up, it means saying goodbye to some classic spots we adored. Here’s a roundup of all changes currently in the works as we know them!

1. Rod’s Liquor – Going

We’re sad to say it but after 70 years, Rod’s Liquor is closing their doors. This farewell is tough because Rod’s friendly service, convenience, and charm really added to our towne. We wish the Fraser family well and thank them for so many great memories over the years! We’ll miss the iconic red, white, and blue walls outside and the classic look of the drive-up parking!

2. Bosscat Kitchen & Libations – Coming

So what’s replacing Rod’s Liquor? Bosscat Kitchen & Libations, which currently has locations in Newport Beach and Houston. The menu features comfort food fused with unique flavors and modern cooking techniques. They’ve also got Saturday and Sunday brunch with a Fruity Pebbles French Toast on the menu (we hope to see that here in Orange, too)! The Newport location houses one of the largest whiskey rooms in all of Orange County. We are very curious to see how much resemblance the Orange location will share with her sister location in Newport Beach. There is no specific opening date set yet, but we’re promised it’ll be open sometime in 2020 as there’s much work to be done.

3. The Potting Shed – Moving Locations

If you haven’t heard yet, The Potting Shed is moving! Don’t worry, they’re not moving out of Old Towne, they’re moving to the heart of the Plaza! Their new location will be on the southeast corner right next to the Assistance League. The new space will even have its own private brick courtyard. It’s set to open October 2019 (this’ll be a quick one, yay!).

4. Brewery 1886 – Coming

The owners of Smoqued BBQ are bringing another business to OTO! Brewery 1886 is set to open sometime next month and its menu features upscale pub food. There are very little details about what they’ll be serving and when exactly they’ll be opening their doors. Four weeks ago they posted a photo of the Old Towne fountain with an ominous caption “Soon.” The banner hangs on the brick and wood exterior teasing that its opening is coming soon. We have very high expectations for this new brewery! How could we not?

5. Philz Coffee – Coming

This coffee shop has been announced for some time, but recently there has been some major progress to its construction! Philz Coffee is set to open in November and we are excited to not have to drive to Fullerton or Huntington Beach to enjoy its unique coffees. Our fave drink is Mint Mojito (no there’s no alcohol in this coffee!) This coffee shop is a Bay Area staple and hopefully, it becomes a staple in OTO as well!

6. Tabu Shabu – Coming

Tabu Shabu is a modern Japanese style hot pot restaurant moving in next door to Paris in a Cup! We’re very excited about this new eatery because there’s nothing quite like it in Old Towne Orange! Tabu Shabu focuses on homemade sauces, fresh meats, seafood, and veggies! Their mission is to give communities a dining experience that is fun, affordable, and high quality! They currently have locations in Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach and we expect the OTO location will be very similar! So if you cannot wait until its projected opening in 2020, definitely go check out their other Orange County locations.
